"Heart disease starts in childhood," says lead researcher Kristen Salomon, PhD, social/health psychologist at University of South Florida at Tampa. They measured the kids' cholesterol, blood pressure, insulin levels, and body mass index (BMI) to determine risk for heart disease. Such positive influences may help children take better care of themselves, offsetting the risk for heart disease.

Nov. 7, 2003 -- A new treatment that helps reduce the risk of premature birth should only be used in women with a history of premature delivery, according to new guidelines. Two recent studies have shown that treating at-risk women with the hormone progesterone during pregnancy can significantly reduce the risk of premature birth. Researchers say premature births account for about 12% of all births in the U.S., defined as birth before 37 weeks of gestation.

The review included 45 women in their mid-30s or older with good-quality embryos who had single blastocyst transfer. Single-embryo transfer is recommended for women under age 35 who have a good chance of achieving a pregnancy. Traditionally, single-embryo transfers have been performed only by necessity in women 35 and over because these women had only a single quality embryo available for transfer, Milki says.

Schneider wondered whether for-profit plans -- such as United and Aetna -- restrict patients' access to costly surgeries more than not-for-profit plans such as Kaiser and Harvard Community Health. Schneider's team used data from patients who in 1997 enrolled in the Medicare+Choice program through their managed care plans. "Managed care, whether for-profit or not-for-profit, is not keeping health care costs under control," Kominski says.

Sept. 30, 2003 -- The war against cancer is a lifelong battle for cancer survivors, and a new report offers diet and exercise advice to help cancer survivors reduce their risk of future cancer attacks. Alcohol can have mixed effects in cancer survivors by increasing the risk of new cancers but reducing the risk of heart disease. Researchers say some of these therapies may even increase health risks among cancer survivors and none of them should be considered an alternative to standard cancer..

One-fifth (20%) of the heart disease patients had symptoms of depression, and researchers found these symptoms were strongly linked to several health indicators. Researchers say the findings show that depressive symptoms are at least as important as heart function in people with heart disease. "Indeed, 'low-tech' measures of health, including depressive symptoms and exercise capacity, were more strongly associated with health status outcomes than 'high-tech' measures of cardiac disease ...
